Criteria for Satisfactory Progress
Criteria for satisfactory progress toward a
graduate degree in Classics, Greek or Latin: Grades, Credits,
Examinations, Thesis, and Dissertation Work
A student who enters with the equivalent of an
undergraduate major in Greek (minor in Latin) or in Latin (minor in
Greek) or in Classics:
- Completes work for the M.A. in no more than 2
years.
- Passes an examination in reading knowledge of a
modern foreign language before work for the M.A. is completed.
- Passes an examination in reading knowledge in
Latin or Greek before the M.A. is completed.
- Passes an examination in reading knowledge of a
second modern foreign language no more than 1 year after the M.A.
Students with an M.A. from another university which did not require
reading knowledge of a modern foreign language must pass
examinations in two modern foreign languages within 2 years after
entering the Ph.D. program.
- Passes an examination in reading knowledge in
the second ancient language no more than 1 year after the M.A.
- Passes the Ancient History exam and begins
taking the five preliminary examinations by their 4th year in residence. (Semesters of graduate degree work in Classics
at other universities will normally count toward the degree work
required for the Ph.D. at Wisconsin).
- Completes the dissertation within 3 years after
completion of the preliminary examinations.
- Maintains a 3.25 GPA after two or more semesters
of graduate work. No more than one grade below B is allowed in the
program.
- Cannot have more than one Incomplete on record
at any one time.
- Enrolls for 9 credits each semester before
beginning work on the dissertation and 3 research credits each
semester thereafter. Exceptions may be made in consultation with
the graduate advisor during the semester in which the student is
taking preliminary examinations and TAing.
- A student who enters with deficiencies may take
no more than 3 semesters to earn the equivalent of an undergraduate
major. Such a student then completes any work remaining for the
M.A. within 2 semesters.
Graduate students are also bound by all
Graduate School rules. All graduate students should become familiar
with the guidelines for advanced degrees published in the
Graduate School Catalog.
