General Admissions Information

Dear Applicant,

Thank you for your interest in our graduate program. All applicants to the program must apply on-line and submit the materials requested below to the Department by the application deadline of January 5. The application fee must also be paid by this deadline.

  1. Statement of purpose (stating your reasons for graduate study).
  2. Official transcripts or academic records from each institution attended. International academic records must be in the original language accompanied by an official English translation. Documents must be issued by the school with the official seal/stamp and an official signature.
  3. Official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score report sent from the Educational Testing Service (ETS).
  4. Three letters of reference. All paper letters must be on official letterhead stationary. The department prefers electronic letters of reference which can be submitted with the on-line application.
  5. Curriculum vitae listing language experience, awards, honors, etc.
  6. TOEFL or MELAB for international applicants.
  7. (Optional) Writing Sample of past scholarly work.

All application materials (except the application fee) should be sent to the Department of Classics. Please do not send the items requested above to the Graduate School as they will not be forwarded to the Department.

In addition to University funds, we have limited scholarship funds administered by the Department of Classics. All applications received in full by January 5 will be eligible for fellowship opportunities from the Graduate School. If application materials are received after the deadline, you will no longer be eligible for a University Fellowship, although you may be eligible for consideration for financial assistance through department funds.
